1/7th Bn Hampshire Regt.

The Wessex Division was a formation created by the establishment of the Territorial Force in 1908. On 24th September, it accepted overseas service in India, in order to relieve regular units for active service. The Division sailed on 9th October 1914, and moved to India to replace regular units in Divisions already in existence in India. The Division remained there sending many drafts to fighting units in the Middle East. Divisional and Brigade staff did not accompany them but remained behind to take over the "Second Line" Division of the Home Service units.

The original strength of the Division was reduced during the war, as the demand for good units increased. It was reformed in the United Kingdom from April 1920.

128th Hampshire Brigade of the Wessex Division under Colonel Crichton as Brigadier with Major Burford-Hancock (Hampshire Regiment) as his Brigade Major.
